Why should you move to Daphne, AL? Let’s take a look at some of the qualities that make this city unique.
People have lived in the area for centuries, with some relics found dating back to 9000 BC. These Native American tribes were later displaced when the European settlers entered the area, and eventually, in 1814, this part of what would later be Alabama was incorporated into the United States.
The Native American tribes who settled in the area included the Creek, the Choctaw, the Tensaw, and the Seminole. These tribes often came to the area that is now Daphne to meet on neutral territory. At one point, it’s estimated that Daphne was home to about 5,000 people during this time, and they were the first ones to make contact with Hernando de Soto, the Spanish explorer who came to the area in 1540.
After the Spanish settled the area, the land now home to Daphne, switched hands several times. In the 1700s, it was under French control, but the land was later ceded to the British in 1763. This is when a permanent settlement was created in Daphne, although it was named the Village at the time. Later, in 1783, the land returned to Spanish control until it was taken in 1814 by General Andrew Jackson.
During the Civil War, Daphne actually served as the seat for Baldwin County because Blakeley, the previous seat, was abandoned. While that would later change, it did help put Daphne on the map and assist in building up its population. Daphne AL real estate expanded during this time as the town grew.
In 1927, Daphne, Alabama was officially incorporated as a town. It had about 500 residents at the time, but it quickly grew over the years until, in 2008, it was one of the biggest cities in the county. Today, this suburb of Mobile relies mainly on healthcare and education as its primary industries.
