There are many different Fort Morgan vacation rentals that allow you to stay near the peninsula, too, so you can truly experience everything at the fort at any time.
The Beginning of Fort Morgan
Fort Morgan is built on top of the ruins of Fort Bowyer. That form, originally build in 1814, played a key part in the War of 1812 against the British. After repelling a naval invasion in the First Battle of Fort Bowyer, the fort was captured during the Second Battle of Fort Bowyer in a battle that technically occurred after the war. Once the British received word that a peace treaty had been signed, they retreated.
Fort Bowyer was damaged, however, and the U.S. Army saw that Mobile Bay needed to be more heavily defended. The fort was demolished and, eventually, the more heavily protected Fort Morgan was completed in 1834. Today, the large masonry structure stands surrounded by a number of amazing beaches, activity centers, and Fort Morgan beach rentals.
The Civil War
During the Civil War, the fort was quickly captured by the Confederate forces and used to secure Mobile Bay from the Union. It was the key site for the Battle of Mobile Bay, under which Admiral David Farragut of the Union set his fleet against the fort and the Confederate fleet. He was able to get past the defenses and take the bay, and the fort took heavy damage. Parts of the roof caught fire, and the barracks ended up being completely demolished. The materials were used to repair other parts of the fort.
After being repaired, the fort was later abandoned in the 1870s. However, it was renovated and played an important part in a number of conflicts, including serving as a radio station during World War I. In 1946, the fort became the property of Alabama and was decommissioned as an Army base. In 1960, it was named a National Historic Landmark and is now a tourist attraction and is surrounded by many Fort Morgan vacation rentals.
Make sure you take your time to explore the fort. This historical site offers self-guided tours that lead you through the large complex. You’ll meet a number of costumed experts along the way who will explain everything about the fort and history.
The Beach at Fort Morgan
Many people look for Fort Morgan rentals because of the beach. Being surrounded on three sides provides the area with many great beaches. What’s great about the beaches at Fort Morgan is that many miles of the area are completely undeveloped and retain their natural beauty. It’s just you, the beach, and the emerald waters of the Gulf of Mexico.
There are few stores near the beaches, but that’s what many love about this area. Because there are so many great places to play in the warm waters or lay out and take in the sun, you can also usually find a spot secluded where you won’t be bothered by anyone else. This is the main reason why Fort Morgan beach rentals are booked so quickly. Additionally, because of the various parts of the Fort Morgan area (excluding Bon Secour) are pet friendly, there are numerous pet friendly vacation rentals to choose from!
Explore Dauphin Island
If you’ve completed your tour of the fort and want to continue your history lesson, you can take the ferry over to Fort Gaines on Dauphin Island. Children may find the ferry trip more exciting than either fort since riding one is an opportunity not available in many places. Once you’ve completed the trip, you’ll find more than just Fort Gaines. The island is also home to the Estuarium, a part of the Dauphin Island Sea Lab that includes educational exhibits and an aquarium. Many people who stay in Fort Morgan rentals visit Dauphin Island at least once during their stay.
Hike through Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge
A large portion of the Fort Morgan Peninsula is designated as the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge. It covers about 7,000 acres and contains a variety of different landscapes, including wetlands, lakes, scrub forests, and a large sand dune system. All of these different environments are available within easy travel from many Fort Morgan beach house rentals. Hike through the nature trails that wind through the scrub forest, watch for rare birds, and enjoy a picnic lunch outdoors. The refuge office has all the information you’ll need to explore this part of the island and is conveniently located near our numerous Fort Morgan beach rentals.
